Silvio Dante

Played by: Steven Van Zandt

Seasons: 1-6 (all six seasons)

Character type: Supporting / Consigliere

Overview

Silvio Dante is Tony's consigliere, the family advisor and confidant. Steven Van Zandt's portrayal brings gravitas and a wry sense of humor to every scene he appears in. Silvio speaks in a distinctive Italian-American accent and uses few words, but each one carries weight.

His role as consigliere places him at the center of the family's decision-making process. Silvio is known for his calm demeanor, even in the most dangerous situations. He often serves as a voice of reason, though Tony doesn't always listen to him.

Character Arc

Silvio begins as Tony's trusted advisor and closest friend, someone who has been with the family since its early days. His relationship with Tony is built on mutual respect and decades of shared experience.

Throughout the series, Silvio remains loyal to Tony despite his own moral qualms about the criminal life. He often tries to guide Tony toward better decisions, but ultimately respects Tony's autonomy as the boss.

In later seasons, Silvio becomes more involved in the family's affairs, serving as a bridge between Tony and the older generation of mobsters. His character represents the wisdom and experience that comes with age in the criminal world.

Key Relationships

  • Tony Soprano: His boss and best friend, whose judgment he respects deeply.
  • Paulie Walnuts: A longtime friend who often clashes with Silvio's more cautious nature.
  • Ralph Cifaretto: Another longtime associate whom Silvio respects as a fellow mobster.

Notable Episodes

  • The Visitation: Silvio's first therapy session, where he reveals his fears about Tony.
  • Made in America: Silvio's final scene with Tony in the series finale.

After the Show

Steven Van Zandt never really left music, and Silvio was almost a side gig compared to his decades with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. He has continued touring and recording with the band well past the Sopranos era, and he still runs his own radio show, Little Steven's Underground Garage, which has been on the air since 2002.

He also created and starred in Lilyhammer (2012-2014), a Norwegian-Netflix crime drama where he plays an American mob informant relocated to Norway under witness protection. It was one of Netflix's first original series and gave Van Zandt a lead role that let him carry a whole show instead of playing second to Tony. He has said the role let him explore comedy in a way Silvio never did.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of the E Street Band, and he has produced records for artists across rock and soul. Acting mostly took a back seat again after Lilyhammer, but he has said he would consider more if the right part came along.

Fans who want the music side of him can find Lilyhammer on Amazon, or track down his solo records, which lean political and rootsy in a way that surprises people who only know him as Silvio.
