A Hit is a Hit

Episode guide - plot, credits, music, and analysis.

Plot

Christopher Moltisanti becomes friendly with Massive Genius, a rap music industry figure who has grievances with Hesh Rabkin. Massive's claim is that Hesh's old soul recording operations used Black artists without proper credit or royalties -- that Hesh built his fortune on stolen creative labor. Massive wants acknowledgment and compensation, or at least a meeting.

Christopher gets caught between these two worlds. He wants to use the connection to make his own mark in entertainment while maintaining loyalty to Tony and Hesh. The attempt at music business dealing goes sideways in small ways that reveal Christopher's naivete about that world. Adriana is more pragmatic and sees through some of the posturing faster than Christopher does.

Tony has been spending time with his Ivy League neighbors the Cusamanos, who invite him to play golf and treat him as a novelty. Tony recognizes that he is being used as a conversation piece and finds the experience mildly humiliating and mildly pleasurable at the same time. Charmaine Bucco, working a catering gig at a Cusamano party, has a pointed exchange with Carmela that underscores the class tensions running through the season.
