Denial, Anger, Acceptance

Episode guide - plot, credits, music, and analysis.

Plot

Christopher and Brendan steal another truck despite Tony's explicit orders to stop. This one belongs to someone connected to Junior's associates, and the fallout is immediate. Tony dresses down Christopher in person at Satriale's. Brendan's insubordination is treated more seriously: Junior's enforcer Mikey Palmice shoots Brendan dead in his bathtub, staging it as a mob execution. Tony learns about it after the fact.

A young man named Shlomo Tanenbaum, connected to Hesh Rabkin's world, has a grievance that goes sideways. Christopher and associates are sent to deal with the situation, which does not resolve cleanly. Junior and Livia continue bonding over shared complaints, with Livia feeding Junior negative impressions of Tony's conduct as a leader.

Dr. Melfi walks Tony through the stages of grief: denial, anger, acceptance. Tony applies the framework to how he has handled his depression and his relationship with his mother. His resistance to self-examination is visible in every session. Livia's passive manipulation of Junior is becoming a pattern that Tony has not yet identified as a threat.
