Plot
The second season opens on an uneasy note, shifting the tone from familial tragedy to high-stakes corporate crime and political paranoia. Tony Soprano finds himself in a unique position of power but also isolation; he is now effectively running two distinct criminal organizations simultaneously while his uncle Junior sits behind bars facing twelve RICO predicates that could mean life imprisonment or death. The professional family, however chaotic it may be internally under the old guard's influence, officially falls into Tony's lap.
This new reality forces a drastic change in operating style: "bunker mode." With federal agents sniffing around and Junior out of commission to manage things personally is impossible without drawing immediate heat. The episode introduces us immediately to this tension as Christopher Moltisanti navigates his latest venture, having secured an SEC broker's license thanks entirely to the interventionist efforts of a man who took the test for him. Now leading two volatile cousins - Matt Bevelaqua and Sean Gismonte - who bring their old-world thuggery into the sterile world of white-collar finance by pouring hot coffee on clients in front of stockbrokers, Christopher faces an uphill battle trying to sell fraudulent stocks specifically targeted at senior citizens.
The atmosphere thickens further with one massive return: Big Pussy. After a long absence involving therapy sessions for his back and time spent enjoying the company of an acupuncturist while hiding out in Puerto Rico, he suddenly reappears on Tony's doorstep indignant about being labeled as a rat who betrayed him to law enforcement.
The dynamic shifts immediately from loyalty testing. While Paulie validates Pussy's story regarding his whereabouts and treatment - confirming the details align with what they know - the trust issue remains unresolved within The Family, especially given everything that has transpired since Tony took down Junior's operation before it was even fully exposed to federal scrutiny.
Tony isn't alone in facing internal family crises. His mother Livia is still hospitalized for reasons that remain ambiguous - is she recovering from a stroke or simply trying one last time at avoiding confrontation with her son? Meanwhile, Janice Soprano returns home after years away living under the pseudonym Parvati.
Tony's suspicion runs deep when his sister claims to only care about their mother's well-being. He warns Carmela that whatever game she is playing will leave him five thousand dollars lighter before she "rain dances back" from her commune lifestyle again - referencing Janice' previous spiritual escapades and financial drain on the family.
