Livia dies of a stroke, bringing the family together one more time for the funeral where old tensions resurface.
Plot
Livia Soprano dies. The real-life death of actress Nancy Marchand between seasons meant the show had to kill its central antagonist without resolving her story arc. Tony learns of his mother's death and his reaction is complicated: relief, guilt about the relief, suppressed grief, and a lifelong ambivalence that her death does not resolve. He has to perform mourning for a family while not knowing what he actually feels.
The house fills with mourners. Janice takes control immediately, directing the funeral arrangements and inserting herself as the family's emotional center in ways that irritate Tony. Carmela navigates between genuine condolence and private relief that this particular source of tension in her marriage is gone. Extended family and associates cycle through. Tony sits through the rituals with the face he shows the world.
The episode includes archival footage of the real Livia -- Marchand from earlier seasons -- inserted into a home movie context, giving the character a final moment of presence that acknowledges the loss of the actress. Tony watches old footage. Janice moves into Livia's house rather than return to Seattle, which Tony had not anticipated and immediately resents.
