All Happy Families...

Episode guide - plot, credits, music, and analysis.

All Happy Families... (S05E04) aired March 28, 2004. Written by Toni Kalem and directed by Rodrigo Garcia, it is the fourth episode of season five. The title comes from the opening line of Anna Karenina: "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."

Plot

Feech La Manna has been back in New Jersey long enough to make his ambitions obvious. He wants a major book and a full restoration of his pre-prison position, and he is not waiting. He has pushed into gambling operations that were not his, taken over territory that other crew members were running, and generally behaved as though his decades-long sentence earned him the right to do whatever he pleases.

Tony decides Feech has to go back to prison. He cannot be killed without complications -- Feech has old connections that would make that outcome expensive. Instead Tony sets him up. He arranges for Feech to be told about a car theft operation and then ensures the FBI is positioned to intercept. Feech walks into a parole violation with both hands. He goes back to prison without understanding precisely how it was arranged.

Tony Blundetto is trying to hold to his straight-and-narrow path but Angelo Garepe is killed in an ambush, and Blundetto is connected to the aftermath in ways that pull him back toward his old world despite his intentions. The season's long-running conflict between Blundetto's desire for a different life and the logic of the world he came from is beginning to close in.
