Moe n' Joe

Episode guide - plot, credits, music, and analysis.

Plot

Vito Spatafore returns to New Jersey. His time in New Hampshire with Jim was not enough to sustain him. He missed the life, the money, the status, and the specific weight of being someone who matters in a particular world. He contacts the family through back channels and eventually reaches Tony, who has been trying to protect him from Phil Leotardo's demand for execution. With Vito back in New Jersey, the situation becomes impossible to manage at a distance.

Phil Leotardo has Vito killed. The murder happens away from Tony's direct supervision and is presented as something Phil was going to do regardless of what Tony wanted. The manner of the killing is deliberately brutal, expressing Phil's contempt. Tony learns what happened after the fact. He absorbs it as information about Phil's character and Phil's intentions, storing it for later use rather than responding immediately.

Janice and Bobby Baccalieri take a trip. Bobby is wearing a hat that becomes a running joke in the episode. The Bobby and Janice relationship continues to be one of the show's most unexpected warm spots -- two people who should not work together and somehow do. Tony's recovery from the shooting is complete. The softness and openness of the hospital period are receding and the old Tony is reasserting himself.
