Cold Stones

Episode guide - plot, credits, music, and analysis.

Plot

Carmela and Rosalie Aprile are in Paris. They do the tourist circuit -- the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame. Rosalie is good company: practical and direct. They eat well and walk, and Carmela is happy in the specific way she was happy in Paris the first time -- released from the weight of being Tony Soprano's wife in a place where no one knows who that is. The episode cuts between Paris and New Jersey.

Back in New Jersey, Phil Leotardo has been consolidating his position as the dominant power in New York following Johnny Sack's incapacitation. Little Carmine Lupertazzi has been trying to position himself as a mediating figure between Tony and Phil, but Phil's ambitions are not easily mediated. Tony watches the New York transition with cold assessment of what it means for New Jersey's position going forward.

The Paris sequences and the New Jersey sequences are edited in parallel without explicit commentary on the contrast, which is the show's way of letting the audience do the work. Carmela eating dinner at a Paris cafe is simply herself. Tony managing the fallout of Phil's moves is simply himself. The episode directed by Tim Van Patten holds these two realities in the same frame without resolving the tension between them.
