Plot

The episode opens with the tension already palpable, driven by the sudden and shocking news that New Jersey has been infiltrated. Vin Makazian approaches Tony with grave tidings: a mole exists within their ranks. The twist that throws the family into panic is not just the existence of the rat, but its identity. It appears to be Anthony Junior's old friend and confidant, Paulie "Pussy" Bonpensiero. The revelation is catastrophic because it undermines the very foundation of Tony's trust; he cannot easily discard a man who has been with him since the start. However, a closer look at Pussy's recent behavior suggests an innocent explanation rather than betrayal. Following a botched raid on Jimmy Altieri's social club, where Altieri escaped only to break his back, Pussy found himself in a precarious physical and financial state. His wife had bailed him out, but he is now drowning in pain medication and medical bills for his own children, let alone the tuition costs looming over his kids' education. Prison is a terrifying prospect for a father trying to provide, making the idea of turning informant almost unthinkable on its face. To verify Makazian's claims, Tony orders Paulie to inspect himself for a listening device before taking any drastic action. The investigation takes an unexpected turn when Makazian is arrested at a bordello, allegedly for soliciting services. Before authorities can extract a full confession or establish his motive for selling out the mob - which was reportedly financial - he takes his own life by jumping off a bridge. With the primary source of information dead and the rat still unverified, Tony turns to the only other party who could possibly know the truth: Jimmy Altieri. Altieri arrives at the Soprano residence with an urgent request to speak with Tony alone, ostensibly about the hit on his safehouse. His demeanor is overly eager and suspicious, immediately raising red flags for anyone observing from a distance. The meeting confirms what the audience suspects: Altieri is the rat. The dilemma shifts from finding who sold out the family to dealing with the fallout of their disappearance. While Tony confronts the reality that Paulie has vanished, he receives another blow: Junior has placed a hit on Tony himself, complicating an already fractured relationship within the core family unit.
